Triple Eight race driver Broc Feeney has pulled off a stunning Sprint Cup comeback, claiming the title at the Ipswich Super 440 at Queensland Raceway.

The Queenslander started Sunday’s decider 110 points behind Kiwi Matt Payne, before an electrical failure forced Payne out of contention.

The 23-year-old capitalised, winning Race 28 to secure the Sprint Cup by 30 points.

Broc Feeney said he was in disbelief after the race at Willowbank.

“I’ve got to give a lot of credit to my dad because he’s been telling me all week it wasn’t over.

“Even today he kept saying, ‘You’ve still got a shot at this.’ I didn’t really believe it,” he said.

Despite celebrating the title, Feeney spared a thought for his rival.

“Huge condolences to Penrite Racing CEO Brenton Grove and driver Matt Payne because, to be honest, he probably deserved it. They’ve done such a good job all year.”

Broc Feeney said his focus was simply on winning the race rather than tracking the championship battle.

“I would have rather won that race than the Sprint Cup, to be honest, and taken that momentum. But to do both, far out, it’s been so much fun at QR.”

Feeney also praised Queensland Raceway’s place on the Supercars calendar.

“If they’re even contemplating taking this place off the map, they’re really silly. This is the heartland of Supercars and we absolutely love it here.”
