School camp turns into major flood rescue in Scenic Rim

A school camp has ended as a major rescue operation after a large group of students and teachers became stranded by rising flood waters in the Mt Barney National Park.

The alarm was raised around 5:30pm on Monday afternoon as weather conditions worsened on the western-side of the mountain, where 43 students and five teachers from North Lakes State College were camping. 

Swift water rescue along with S-E-S crews, were deployed to the incident and used two inflatable rescue boats to ferry the students and teachers through rising floodwaters.

All arrived back on dry land safely by 10 last night.

Queensland Ambulance says that paramedics assessed everyone on scene, with a teenager taken to Ipswich Hospital with an incidental medical issue.

In a statement, North Lakes State College, along with a spokesperson from the Department of Education emphasised that the safety and wellbeing of all students is their highest priority.

“The students and staff returned to Brisbane safely in the early hours of the morning, ” the spokesperson said. 

The Department also thanked emergency services and school staff for their response.

The incident was one of more than 200 SES callouts in the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Logan regions after  heavy downpours lashed the region over a 24 hour period.
