The threat isn’t over for the Lockyer Valley, with authorities warning further storms could worsen flooding later today.
More than 100 millimetres of rain has fallen across parts of the region overnight after days of wet weather, sending fast-moving water through Laidley Creek and other waterways.
Attention is now turning to the township of Laidley, where the floodgates have been activated as emergency crews brace for the possibility of major flooding as well as storms and heavy rain this afternoon.
Lockyer Valley Mayor Tanya Milligan said the region’s sunny conditions are giving people a false sense of security.
“It looks like we’ve just had some rain. The sun’s been out and it looks like a great day in the Lockyer Valley, but it’s deceiving. It will change.”
“Swiftwater rescue crews are on standby, while council staff and emergency services monitor river levels and prepare for further impacts,” she said.
Mayor Milligan said it’s still too early to determine how many roads have been cut at this stage because conditions are changing rapidly.
“I couldn’t tell you about road conditions as the water comes up really quickly and then goes back down.”
A major flood warning remains in place for Laidley Creek, while a minor flood warning is current for Lockyer Creek
