One of the standout announcements is Google’s offer of a free 12-month Google AI Pro plan for students in the U.S., Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Brazil (hopefully we get this in Australia soon). This initiative includes expanded access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, one of Google’s most advanced AI models. Gemini provides quick homework and writing assistance, deep research capabilities, and tools like NotebookLM, which organizes ideas and enhances productivity. Students also gain access to Veo 3, an AI-powered tool that converts text or images into short videos, and Jules, an asynchronous AI coding agent designed to help students debug and build code. With 2 TB of storage included, students can easily manage their notes, projects, and files.
Perhaps the most exciting addition is Guided Learning, a feature in Gemini designed to move beyond simple answers. Acting as a learning companion, it provides step-by-step guidance and visual aids to help students deepen their understanding of complex topics. From solving math problems to structuring essays, Guided Learning is designed to foster critical thinking and independent learning.
Google is also investing in the broader ecosystem of AI education. The company has committed $1 billion over three years toward AI literacy programs, research funding, and cloud computing resources in the U.S. Its new initiative, the Google AI for Education Accelerator, offers free AI training and Google Career Certificates to college students, with over 100 universities already signed up. This builds on Google’s existing efforts, such as Gemini for Education and the widespread adoption of Google Workspace for Education by top U.S. institutions.
