Moments in Australia Turning 10, 20, 30, & 40 Years Old in 2026

Time is always passing and it feels like I am wilting away…

With the start of a new year the question popped up around the office that none of us really wanted to answer “Hey, so what happened ten years ago from 2026?”. Then the office child answered “it was 2016, I was in year five!”. Everyone else then got incredibly depressed and kicked them in the shins. Well, we didn’t do that last part but we all wanted to, thanks Haidyn, you gave us all an existential crisis you toddler!

So, because you all have to suffer like I did, I’ve compiled a list of notable Australian events and notable pieces of media that celebrate a decade anniversary in 2026.

10 Years Ago (2016)

  • January 5th – Dick Smith electronics goes into voluntary administration
  • February 29th – Cardinal George Pell provides evidence to Royal Commission into Institutional Response to Child Sexual Abuse via a video-link from Rome stating that he is”not there to defend the indefensible”
  • July 10th – Malcolm Turnbull claims victory in the federal election
  • August 9th – Australia’s online census crashes due to suspected cyber attacks
  • September 15th – AFLW is founded
  • September 28th – South Australia experiences state wide black out
  • October 1st – Western Bulldogs defeat Sydney Swans in the AFL grand final, this is the second AFL premiership win
  • October 2nd – Cronulla Sharks defeat Melbourne Storm in NRL grand final, this is their first and only NRL premiership win

20 Years Ago (2006)

  • February 9th – Eddie McGuire is announced as CEO of Channel Nine
  • February 17th – The Chaser’s War on Everything premiered it’s first episode
  • April 5th – Thank God You’re Here premiered it’s first ever episode
  • June 29th – Ten Canoes the first full-length film entirely in Australian Aboriginal language is related, it would go on to win a jury prize at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival
  • October 1st – Brisbane Broncos play the Melbourne Storm in the NRL grand final, it is the first time ever that no NSW team plays in the premiership match
  • September 4th – Steve Irwin passes away
  • October 16th – Hacksaw Ridge releases
  • November 17th – the film Happy Feet releases worldwide
  • November 21st – Ian Thorpe announces retirement
  • November 26th – Jessica Mauboy us defeated by Damien Leith on Australian Idol
  • December 21st – Shane Warne announces he will retire from cricket, Glen McGrath makes similar announcement but sets a date of 23 December 2007 (after the Cricket World Cup)
