Back to the Future 3 Turns 35 Today, Will We Ever See It Again?

Yep, you read that right the LAST movie was 35 years ago.

It’s been a long time since 1985. The last film in the Back to the Future franchise turns 35 years old today, and the very original film turns 40 years old later this year in August. But yes, the Back to the Future franchise ended officially 35 years ago today and we’ve not seen it since. Despite the fact in all that time we’ve seen nothing about the originals returning, it hasn’t been completely devoid of hope.

Whilst the film’s original creator Robert Zemeckis has stated many times that he didn’t want to see the franchise return, he was caught last year whilst on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he was interested in adapting the musical of the film for the big screen.

“I would like to do Back to the Future: The Musical… Just like Mel Brooks did with The Producers. I would love to do that. I think it would be great,” – Robert Zemeckis

Even McFly himself, Michael J Fox, has spoken on the topic of a revival many times, though Fox has an idea on how to keep it fresh. Whilst chatting with Entertainment Tonight, Fox said:

“I actually had this thought that if they did the movie again, they should do it with a girl as Marty… There’s something about Back to the Future that just connects with people on every level. I just feel like it will come around again,”

It has also been reported by multiple sources that if a reboot or part 4 ever were to happen that our newest McFly should be played by Millie Bobby Brown. Bobby Brown has been picked as the current favourite to jump on the pink hoverboard and don the name McFly. Fox though has stated that he thinks it’s very unlikely if the franchise were to come back that he’d be part of it, and despite his thoughts on keeping it fresh, he doesn’t think it needs to be revived.

“I don’t think it needs rebooting because are you going to clarify something? You’re going to find a better way to tell the story? I doubt it… I would love to do a sequel, but I think Bob Zemeckis and Spielberg felt that they told the story in three episodes, but if somebody has a brilliant idea that would justify a fourth film, it might happen.” Fox told Variety.
