The teen who murdered Ipswich grandmother Vyleen White has been sentenced to 16 years jail.

The then 17-year-old pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing the 70-year-old during a car jacking at an Ipswich Shopping Centre in February last year.

The horrific attack was witnessed by Ms White’s granddaughter.

Chief Justice Helen Bowskill handed down the sentence in the Brisbane Supreme Court this morning.

The judge found the teen had special circumstances, including his youth, early guilty plea and prospects of rehabilitation.

Because of this, the teen will only be required to serve 60 per cent of his sentence , which means with time served he will spend nine and a half years in jail with parole eligibility in 2033.

Vyleen White’s family have been instrumental in campaigning for Queensland’s new Adult Time, Adult Crime laws but because the teens offending occurred after the legislation, the laws didn’t apply in sentencing.
