A Swanbank waste operator who was behind that ‘stinky’ compost fire over Christmas has been told to clean up their act.

Department of Environment and Science put an Environmental Protection order in place after fire broke out at the Wood Mulching Industries Pty Ltd site on December 23.

It follows hundreds of complaints to authorities during the festive season after the fire reportedly smouldered a foul smelling smoke across parts of Ipswich for days.

The company has since been fined $30,000 in relation to the incident.

The DES order, which is under the Environmental Protection Act 1994 ,requires the operator to take immediate steps to minimise fire risks, including by reducing the size and changing the configuration of the stockpiles on site.

The Department said it won’t hesitate to take further action to ensure ongoing compliance with the operator’s environmental responsibilities.

A copy of the order will be available on the DES’s website.
