A man has swam to safety after the helicopter he was flying crashed into a dam in Tarome.

The crash happened just after 3pm yesterday afternoon, with the chopper reportedly collecting water as part of QFES waterbombing operations.

It’s believed it was hovering close to the surface of the dam, when it hit the water and rolled.

The pilot was able to free himself and swim to shore, he was later airlifted to Toowoomba Hospital by the RACQ LifeFlight Rescue Chopper with minor injuries.

It’s reported the aircraft was working to assist efforts to control a fire burning at Tregony.

QFES says they will assist the Australian Transport Safety Bureau with its investigation.
