Man accused of drink-driving, hitting pedestrian in Ipswich

Police are appealing for witnesses after a pedestrian was allegedly struck by a drink-driver at Eastern Heights in Ipswich on Saturday May 25.

It will be alleged just before 7.30pm, a blue-grey 2006 Holden Commodore was travelling along Rex Road when it struck a pedestrian, before leaving the scene and crashing at a nearby intersection at Grange Road and Robertson Road in Raceview.

Upon arrival, police located the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a 39-year-old Greenbank man, inside the stationary sedan.

He was taken into police custody and charged with one count each of dangerous operation of a vehicle and adversely affected by an intoxicating substance, driver fail to remain at incident and render assistance showing callous disregard for the needs of a person injured, driving of a motor vehicle without a driver licence, and serious assault police officer.

He is due to appear at Ipswich Magistrates Court today, May 27.

The pedestrian, a 42-year-old Eastern Heights man, was transported to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with spinal injuries.

Police are appealing to witnesses or anyone with dashcam vision to come forward.

Nearby residents with CCTV, and motorists travelling in the Eastern Heights or Raceview area between 7.15pm and 7.45pm, are urged to contact police.
