Ipswich sprint sensation Gout Gout has announced that he won’t be lining up to compete at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in Scotland later this year.
Instead, Gout’s made the tough call to focus on the 200 metre World Under 20 Junior Championships – a long-held dream for the teen to become the first Australian to win gold. The event in Eugene, USA, kicks off just three days after the Glasgow 2026 Games, making his decision even tougher.
Australian Commonwealth Games Team Chef de Mission, Petria Thomas OAM, said she completely understood Gout’s choice.
“I think it’s important that we all remember he is 18 and remains on the rise. He has a long career ahead of him and we respect his decision to prioritise the world under 20 championships as he builds towards a home Olympic Games at Brisbane 2032.
“I may not get the chance to watch him in Scotland, but you can be sure I’ll be keeping an eye on his results in Eugene this August.”
Chef de Mission Petria Thomas said that Gout is a remarkable talent and although he won’t be in Glasgow, we hope to see him don the green and gold at a Commonwealth Games in the future.
The Games will held in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2 this year.
