Just when we thought Christopher Nolan couldn’t push the cinematic envelope any further, the master of the “big screen experience” has dropped the full trailer for his latest epic, The Odyssey. Premiering on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the footage offers our first comprehensive look at Nolan’s reimagining of Homer’s ancient Greek poem.
Following a trail of breadcrumbs that included a minimalist teaser last July and a sprawling 5.5-minute IMAX prologue attached to Avatar: Fire and Ash, this trailer finally gives us a sense of the scale Universal Pictures is playing with. And scale, it seems, is the operative word.
A Modern Take on an Ancient Hero
At its core, The Odyssey follows Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, on his arduous journey home after the fall of Troy. While the source material is thousands of years old, Nolan appears to be leaning into the timeless themes of heroism, loyalty, and the relentless struggle against divine will.
The trailer highlights the iconic moments every literature student remembers, from the terrifying encounter with the Cyclops Polyphemus, to the hypnotic call of the Sirens, and the transformative magic of Circe. However, in true Nolan fashion, these sequences look less like dusty mythology and more like a visceral survival thriller.
The Cast of the Century?
Nolan has always had a knack for assembling ensembles, but The Odyssey cast list reads like a “who’s who” of contemporary Hollywood. Matt Damon leads the pack, joined by a staggering lineup including Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and Robert Pattinson.
The diversity of talent continues with Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, and John Leguizamo, alongside rising stars like Mia Goth and Corey Hawkins. Seeing how Nolan balances these massive personalities within the framework of a single voyage will be half the fun of the cinema experience.

Two Million Feet of Film
If you think your home theatre setup is impressive, Nolan is here to remind us why the cinema still reigns supreme. The production saw over two million feet of film shot over a 91-day schedule. Most notably, The Odyssey is the first major studio feature to be shot entirely using a new IMAX technology.
Rather than switching aspect ratios for key sequences, the entire film is designed for the format. It is a bold technical commitment that reinforces Nolan’s status as the industry’s most vocal defender of celluloid.
July 2026: Mark Your Calendars
The film is reported to clock in at just under three hours, relatively brisk by Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” standards, and is set for a global release on July 17, 2026. Given the mid-July slot, Universal is clearly positioning this as the definitive blockbuster event of the year. Whether you are a fan of Greek mythology or just a devotee of high-concept filmmaking, The Odyssey looks set to be a journey worth taking.
