Damn, I won’t gloat about my time ever again.

Over the weekend the London Marathon took place and history was made when the world record time was beaten by not just one racer, but two. Previously the record was held by Kelvin Kiptum who ran a marathon in 2:00:35 in the 2024 Chicago Marathon. Kiptum however has since passed away at the age of 24, after dying in a car crash in Kenya later that year in 2024.

Though the new world record holder, and first person to ever run a marathon in under two hours is Sabastian Sawe from Kenya. Sawe completed his race in 1:59:30, setting a new world record and making history. Though second place also would’ve secured that title had Sawe not beaten him. Yomif Kejelcha from Ethiopia finished in second place with a staggering 1:59:41, becoming the second person ever to finish a marathon in under two hours.

“I am feeling good, I am happy, it’s a day to remember for me,… We started the race well. Approaching finishing the race, I was feeling strong. Finally reaching the finish line, I saw the time and I was so excited. I am so happy for today. Coming to London for the second time was so important to me and that’s why I prepared well for it.” – Sabastian Sawe, in a post-race interview with the BBC.
