A Meteoric Rise
Australian singer-songwriter Alex Lloyd, best known for his 2001 hit Amazing, has opened up about a turbulent period that nearly ended his career, and how he’s now ready to shine again. The story, featured on Australian Story in an episode titled Dark Star, reveals the behind-the-scenes struggles that derailed one of Australia’s most beloved musicians.

The Lawsuit That Shattered His World
Lloyd’s journey from child busker in Balmain to ARIA‑winning artist was meteoric, but a damaging legal accusation in 2009, claiming he plagiarised Amazing, shattered his sense of self. Forced to revisit trauma from his childhood, he faced depression, the breakdown of his marriage, extreme weight gain, and an opioid addiction to oxycodone.

Performing Through Pain
At his heaviest, Lloyd weighed 168 kg and continued performing while battling addiction and self-doubt. Despite living in withdrawal before performances, his devotion to music pulled him through.

The Long Road to Recovery
Now 50 and nearly three years free from opioid dependence, Lloyd credits surgery, counselling, and his love for his four children for his recovery. He’s rekindled his passion for songwriting and is releasing his first studio album in 12 years.

Giving Back Through His Story
Beyond reclaiming his career, Lloyd is giving back, volunteering with youth affected by trauma and using his story to inspire. His return marks not only a creative resurgence but a profoundly human one. “I’m ready to share this part of me now,” he says.
