New research commissioned by Blackmores has revealed that Australians are setting ambitious health and wellness goals, particularly among Gen Z, but many struggle to stick to them. According to the study, 84% of Gen Z set new health goals every year, yet only a quarter of Australians manage to maintain their fitness resolutions for six months or longer.

Why Australians Struggle with Health Goals
While 73% of Australians start the new year with goals focused on diet (49%) and mental wellbeing (48%), time pressures, life admin, and general busyness often get in the way. Over 40% of people admit they’d like to be more disciplined with fitness but simply don’t have the time.

Juliet Glynn, Head of Marketing ANZ at Blackmores, said, “Our research shows Australians have the right intentions when it comes to their health, but life often gets in the way. Many start strong, but only a small percentage manage to stay on track. That’s why simple, sustainable habits are key to long-term wellness.”

The Simple Hack of Habit Stacking
A practical way to maintain health goals is through habit stacking, a strategy that helps build new routines by pairing them with existing ones. As Habitologist Melanie White explains, “It’s about efficiency, like brushing your teeth in the shower. This method makes habits easier to stick to.”

The research shows 34% of Australians already practice habit stacking, with 60% using it to support daily exercise. For example, meditating after a morning run or stretching before bed can help lock in health routines.

Gen Z Leads the Wellness Movement but Faces Unique Challenges
The study found that Gen Z is the most health-focused generation, with 84% setting annual wellness goals. Their priorities include diet and weight management (56%) and improving mental health (55%). However, Gen Z also faces challenges, with 73% admitting their goals get derailed by new wellness trends. Social media plays a big role, with 55% turning to it for health advice, often leading to information overload and fleeting fads.
