The Bravo Family’s Story

Money raised from this event will help support the Bravo family of Ipswich care for their daughter Samantha who is currently fighting Leukemia. Here are a few words from Samantha’s parents describing the challenges they currently face.

Our daughter Samantha Lea Pride was three-years-old when she was diagnosed with (ALL) Leukemia on the 19th of June 2017 at the Lady Cilento Children’s hospital. Samantha was transferred there from Ipswich Hospital on the 17th of June, after four weeks and numerous visits to the hospital where our local doctors told us she was constipated. A Dr. Tae felt her tummy and asked how long she had been so sick. We explained that after weeks of being told she was constipated and on constipation medication that her belly kept swelling, and that we had brought her in again because we thought she may have a blockage in her bowel. The look on the doctor’s face when he felt Samantha’s belly was scary. He looked at my partner and I and said, “your daughters liver and spleen shouldn’t be below her belly button.”

He tested her bloods himself and within half an hour he came back and asked us if there was Leukemia in our families. Samantha, after weeks of tiredness, lack of energy and severe abdominal swelling, he believed, had Leukemia. We then had to wait two agonising days to be told exactly which one. Back then, it was the hardest and longest two days of our lives and the news was devastating. Now we have the longest two years of our lives ahead with treatments and chemo.

One day at a time we will fight this horrible blood disease and we are going to kick cancers butt! Samantha has had a few setbacks on her road to recovery like being allergic to two of her chemo’s, having anaphylaxis, an extremely low immune system and more. Recently she has had lots of stomach pains, cramping, tightening in her leg and neck muscles which have limited her walking ability. Although we have a long journey ahead, we will always do whatever we can to make Samantha comfortable, happy and informed of her treatments. Because our little princess is the strong one here, we are just the mum and dad of another little superhero fighting cancer.

Competition dates: 12/02/2018 – 7am 23/02/2018. There will be one winner who will be notified by phone by River 94.9 each day between 19/02/2018 and 23/02/2018. Each winner will receive two (2) tickets to the Llewellyn Motors League Legends Lunch at Racehorse Hotel Booval on Friday 2 March 2018 valued at $100 per ticket.
