The Kiwi Volvo driver crossing in Surfers Paradise in a time of 1 minute and 11.32 seconds on Friday.
Shane Van Gisbergen and David Reynolds were second and third – pushing the embattled Jamie Whincup back to fourth.
Whincup had another reason to be disappointed after Supercars boss James Warburton labelled his appeal of that 15 second penalty from the Bathurst 1000 “un-Australian”.
The Courier Mail reports Whincup took the comment personally saying “for someone as patriotic as me, it was probably the ultimate sledge”.
“It was up there. We had some pretty bad criticism from all over the place and we don’t feel like we did anything untoward or wrong.
