LOCKYER BY-ELECTION: Rick Vela wins seat

The Lockyer Valley Regional Council by-election has been declared with Rick Vela elected to the seat.
He beat 11 people vying for the council position made available by Jim McDonald who stepped down after being voted in as State MP for Lockyer.
This is what Mr Vela had to say soon after the Electoral Commission of Queensland handed down its decision this afternoon:
"A little bit nervous!
The community has placed a lot faith in me and I take that with a great deal of seriousness.
So, it's a big job.. a lot to learn and especially with outgoing Jim McDonald.. big shoes to fill".
Mr Vela won the council seat over rivals Brett Qualischefski and Mark Newton by around 800 votes.
